The Bertie County Commissioners re ceived an update on the construction of the new Bertie County Public Li brary and Cooperative Extension building at their meeting Monday night. According to MHA Works Project Architect Amber Idol, the project is going well. “The interior projects are still being finished. Ninety-nine percent of the flooring has been completed. The book shelves in the library have been installed. The appliances are coming in. The refriger ator, microwave, wash er and dryer have been delivered. The remain ing furniture will be de livered at the end of the month,” she added. Room signs still need to be installed. Fortunately, those in Bertie County will have the opportunity to help out soon, as a blood drive is planned for Windsor on, Feb. 15. The Red Cross said they have a tough time keeping blood supply strong in winter months when donations are af fected by inclement weather. Adding to that this year is the affects of COVlD-19. “The Red Cross is urg ing individuals to make an appointment to give blood or platelets this month,” said Cally Ed wards of RedCross ENC. The current plan ning in Bertie County involves a blood drive hosted by N.C. Farm Bureau at the Windsor Community Building. The drive is slated for 2-6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 15. As a thank you for helping ensure a stable blood supply, those who come to give blood See DRIVE, A3 Approximately three inch es of snow fell overnight last Wednesday and into Thursday morning. The snow, which was expect ed, did little more than slow down Bertie County residents. Many were able to get out to work even early Thursday and, by late afternoon, most of the main roads were clear. Windsor/Bertie Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lewis Hoggard said while most businesses closed Thursday, there were a few open. He said Friday was pretty much busi ness as usual. “1 think people played it safe,” he said. “If they could open safely, they did and, if not, they were closed for the day. A rmie Bunch has always taken her work seriously. , But, never more so than in the last year. Bunch, who works in house keeping at Vidant Bertie Hos pital, said her job has changed since the COVID-19 pandemic began, but it is also the same: taking care of the patients. “1 interact with patients ev ery day,” Bunch said. “1 talk to them and 1 promise them we will take good care of them, be cause we do.” Bunch started working for Vidant more than 20 years ago when she took a post at Vidant Chowan Hospital. She moved to her current assignment ap proximately 12 years ago. While she and her cowork ers have always been diligent in their work.
